HZM - Hong Kong Border Terminal Competition

The remarkable skyline of today’s Hong Kong at the Victoria Harbor is formed by the extremely dense and tall modern buildings, whereas in the early 1900s the skyline was mainly formed by the mountains, which covered more than half of Hong Kong’s area.

The project aims to re-interpret and re-generate the dual skylines of Hong Kong in terms of space, form, media and time, and also re-define the experience of border-crossing.

Dual Skylines as Media Façades:

The Passenger Clearance Building, where arrival and departure passengers gather, consists of a north and a south façade that respectively takes the form of today’s skyline of Hong Kong and the skyline 100 years ago.  Both facades are multi-media surfaces that exhibit digital images and information of the modern Hong Kong and Hong Kong in the early 1900s.  The building is no longer a typical place for border-crossing.  The multi-media facades define an exhibition space that presents visitors a new kind of experience for border architecture.

Roof as Transition of Space and Time:

The roof structure connects the two media facades with a gradual transition of form from one facade to the other.  Apart from providing a space for border crossing, the roof also implies a transition or crossing of time from early 1900s to today’s Hong Kong.  Passengers experience the change of Hong Kong over 100 years.
